There were more words than one in the Greek to describe a servant. Paul used one word to describe himself as a servant of the Lord (Romans 1:1; Philippians 1:1). That word refers to one who gives himself in a permanent relation to do the will of another. The word for “deacon” also referred to a servant or to one who “executes the commands of another.” It refers in John 2:5, 9 to waiters or people serving food and drink.
